Miswak: The Natural Toothbrush

faisal | Pakistan, Health | Sunday, April 29th, 2007

The Miswak was known before Islam, but Islam added a religious perspective to its usage. The Prophet [sallallahu alayhe wa sallam (SAWS)] recommended Muslims to clean their teeth using a miswak every day; especially after waking, when performing wudhu, before salah, when reciting the Qur’an, before sleeping, and when the mouth smells bad.
miswak
There are many ahadeeth that speak about it. Following are some of them:
A’isha said that the Prophet (SAWS) said, “Ten things are natural (for one to do): Trimming the moustache, growing a beard, (using) the miswak, sniffing up water, cutting the nails, washing hands, plucking armpits, shaving pubic hair, and conserving water“.

He (SAWS) said, “If it were not that it would create hardship for my people, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every wudhu and with every salah.

The miswak was known before Islam, but Islam added a religious perspective to the use of the miswak.

Medical Discoveries
The miswak is a natural tool for brushing the teeth. It is taken from the roots and branches of particular desert trees. It differs from one region to another, but in Arabia and Asia it is taken from the Arak tree. This is the most well known variety, and is the kind that was used by the Prophet (SAWS).

Pakistani Woman

faisal | Pakistan, Society and Culture | Friday, April 27th, 2007

Many women today are independent, successful, educated, professional, and self-sufficient. These are the standards whereby we measure “success” and people with these characteristics are what we regard as “intelligent” as opposed to “uneducated.” However, careful analysis reveals that the woman of the house fulfills the following roles:

  • She has to be a wife to her husband.
  • She has to be a mother to her children.
  • She is a teacher, teaching her children between right and wrong.
  • She is a tutor, assisting with homework.
  • She is a psychologist, using her intellect in daily struggles with husband and children.
  • She is a counselor, counseling the children when a bully hits them.
  • She is a financier, budgeting the household expenses. 8. She is a chef, preparing the meals.
  • She is a baker, baking on special occasions.
  • She is a tailor, mending clothes.
  • She is a driver, ferrying the kids to and from school.
  • She is a buyer and store clerk, ensuring that all basic necessities are in the house.
  • She is a switchboard operator, answering the constantly ringing phone.
  • She is a receptionist, answering the door and receiving guests and visitors.
  • She is a waitress, feeding everyone at mealtime before she feeds herself.

Pakistani Woman
Considering the above multi-faceted roles of our wives/mothers/sisters in society, it really surprises me when a woman is asked what job she has and her typical reply is “Oh, I don’t work. I just sit at home. I’m a housewife.” Housewife indeed! This “housewife” is actually the CEO, the general manager of your house.
